Verse range: 38:77
{مِنْهَا}: From Paradise. It is also said: From the heavens. It is also said: From the state of creation you are currently in; for he used to boast of his creation, so God altered his form. He became black after having been white, ugly after having been beautiful, and dark after having been luminous.
{الرَّجِيمُ}: The marjūm (the stoned). Its meaning is: the expelled, just as he was called al-madḥūr (the driven away) and al-malʿūn (the cursed). This is because whoever is expelled is pelted with stones as they depart. Al-rajm is the act of throwing stones. Alternatively, it means that the devils are pelted with shooting stars (shuhub).
If you ask: His saying, {وَعَلَيْكَ لَعْنَتِي إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ} (And upon you is My curse until the Day of Recompense), implies that Iblis’s curse has an end at the Day of Recompense, after which it ceases?
I say: How could it cease when God Almighty has said: {فَأَذَّنَ مُؤَذِّنٌ بَيْنَهُم أَن لَّعْنَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى الظَّالِمِينَ} (Then an announcer will announce among them, "The curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers")? Rather, the meaning is: The curse is upon him in this world, but when the Day of Recompense arrives, it will be coupled with such [punishment] that the curse will be forgotten in comparison, as if it had ceased.
