Tafsir
Verse range: 39:20
{Chambers, above them are chambers} Lofty rooms, one above another.
If you ask: What is the meaning of His saying {built}? I say: Its meaning—and God knows best—is that they were constructed like the houses built upon the earth, and leveled as they are leveled, {beneath which rivers flow} just as they flow beneath houses, with no difference between the high and the low.
{The promise of God} An emphatic verbal noun (maṣdar), because His saying "they have chambers" carries the meaning: "God has promised them that."
{Do you not see that God sent down water from the sky, then caused it to flow into springs in the earth, then He brings forth with it crops of various colors, then they wither and you see them turning yellow, then He makes them debris? Indeed, in that is a reminder for those of understanding.}
