Tafsir of Az-Zumar 39:64

{أفغير الله} The word "Allah" is in the accusative case (manṣūb) governed by the verb "I worship" (aʿbud). The phrase {تأمرونني} (do you command me) is a parenthetical clause.

The meaning is: "Is it other than Allah that I should worship by your command?" This was revealed when the polytheists said to him: "Touch some of our gods, and we will believe in your God."

Alternatively, it is in the accusative case governed by what the sentence {تأمرونني أعبد} implies, because it carries the meaning of "You worship me and say to me: 'Worship'." The original structure is: "You command me that I worship," where the particle an (that) is elided and the verb is raised, as in the poet's saying: O you who chide me to attend the battle.

Do you not see that you say: "Is it other than Allah that you tell me to worship Him?" and "Is it other than Allah that you tell me to worship?" Thus, it is: "Is it other than Allah that you command me to worship Him?"

The evidence for the validity of this interpretation is the reading of those who recited aʿbud (I worship) in the accusative case (naṣb).

• {تأمروني}: By assimilating the nūn or eliding it.
