Az-Zumar: (71) "And those who disbelieved will be driven..."
"In groups" (zumaran): Scattered throngs, one following another, having gathered into groups. It is said: "Until groups gathered after groups."
Regarding the "groups" of those who feared their Lord, it is said: They are the various ranks—the martyrs, the ascetics, the scholars, the reciters, and others.
It is read: "A warner from among you."
If you ask: Why was "this day" (al-yawm) added to them?
I say: They meant the meeting of this time of yours, which is the time of their entry into the Fire, not the Day of Resurrection. The usage of "the day" and "the days" is widespread regarding times of hardship.
"They said: 'Yes'": They came to us and recited to us, but the word of God became binding upon us—"I will surely fill Hell"—due to our evil deeds, just as they said: "Our wretchedness overcame us, and we were a people astray." Thus, they mentioned their deeds that necessitated the word of punishment, which is disbelief and misguidance.
The lam in "the arrogant" (al-mutakabbirin): It is for the generic class. For "the abode of the arrogant" is the subject of bi'sa (how evil), and the subject of bi'sa is a noun defined by the generic lam, or one added to its like. The specific object of condemnation is omitted; the estimation is: "How evil is the abode of the arrogant: Hell."
{ And those who feared their Lord will be driven to Paradise in groups until, when they reach it and its gates have been opened and its keepers say to them, "Peace be upon you; you have become pure; so enter it to abide eternally therein." And they will say, "Praise to Allah, who has fulfilled for us His promise and made us inherit the earth [so] we may settle in Paradise wherever we will." And excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers. }
