Az-Zumar: (75) "And you will see the angels surrounding..."

{حافين} (Surrounding): Encircling Him from all sides.

{يسبحون بحمد ربهم} (Exalting with the praise of their Lord): They say: "Glory be to Allah and praise be to Allah," doing so out of delight, not out of obligation.

If you ask: To whom does the pronoun refer in His saying: {بينهم} (between them)?

I say: It is possible that it refers to all of the servants, meaning that the admission of some into the Fire and others into Paradise occurs only through a judgment between them based on truth and justice. It is also possible that it refers to the angels, meaning that even though they are all infallible, their rewards are not uniform; rather, their ranks are differentiated according to the differences in their deeds. Thus, it is a judgment between them based on truth.

If you ask: Regarding His saying: {وقيل الحمد لله} (And it will be said, "Praise be to Allah"), who is the speaker?

I say: Those between whom the judgment was made—either all the servants or the angels. It is as if it were said: "Judgment was passed between them with truth, and they said: 'Praise be to Allah for His judgment between us with truth, and for placing each of us in the station that is rightfully ours.'"

From Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to recite Bani Isra'il (Surah Al-Isra) and Az-Zumar every night.
