An-Nisa: 111

"And whoever earns a sin..."

"...then he only earns it against himself." Meaning: Its harm does not extend beyond him to another. Therefore, let him beware of earning evil for his own soul.

"A sin" A minor one.

"Or a crime" A major one.

"Then blames an innocent person for it" Just as Tu'mah blamed Zayd.

"He has burdened himself with a falsehood and a manifest sin." Because by earning the sin, he is a "sinner" (āthim), and by blaming the innocent, he is a "slanderer" (bāhit); thus, he has combined both matters.

Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) recited it as yaksib (with a kasra on the kaf and a shadda on the sin). Its root is yaktasib (to acquire/earn).
