Tafsir of An-Nisa' 4:173

Surah An-Nisa' 4:173

ﲓ ﲔ ﲕ ﲖ ﲗ ﲘ ﲙ ﲚ ﲛ ﲜ ﲝ ﲞ ﲟ ﲠ ﲡ ﲢ ﲣ ﲤ ﲥ ﲦ ﲧ ﲨ ﲩ ﲪ ﲫ ﲬ ﲭ

And as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them in full their rewards and grant them extra from His bounty. But as for those who disdained and were arrogant, He will punish them with a painful punishment, and they will not find for themselves besides Allah any protector or helper.

If you ask: The detailed explanation (tafṣīl) does not correspond to the thing being detailed (mufaṣṣal), because the latter includes two groups, while the former mentions only one.

I reply: It is like saying, "The Imam gathered the Kharijites; whoever did not rebel against him, he clothed and provided for, and whoever did rebel, he punished." The validity of this rests on two points:

  1. One of the two groups may be omitted because the detailed explanation implies it, and mentioning one group points to the other. This is similar to how one of the two groups was omitted in the detailed explanation that follows this verse: "As for those who believe in Allah and hold fast to Him..."
  2. Showing kindness to others [the believers] is something that grieves the arrogant; thus, it is included in the concept of their punishment. It is as if it were said: "Whoever disdains His worship and acts arrogantly will be tormented by regret when he sees the rewards of the workers, and by the punishment of Allah that will befall him."

"The Proof and the Clear Light" The Quran, or he meant by "the proof" the true religion or the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). By "the clear light," he meant that which clarifies and confirms it, namely the miraculous Book.

"In mercy from Him and bounty" In a deserved reward and [additional] grace.

"And He will guide them to Him" To His worship.

"A straight path" Which is the path of Islam. The meaning is their success and their steadfastness.
