Tafsir of An-Nisa' 4:44

"Have you not seen..." This refers to the vision of the heart. It is connected with ila (to) in the sense of: "Has your knowledge not reached them?" or in the sense of: "Have you not looked at them?"

"...those who were given a portion of the Book?" A share of the knowledge of the Torah; they are the rabbis of the Jews.

"...they purchase error..." They exchange it for guidance, which is remaining in Judaism after the signs of the truth of the Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) prophethood have become clear to them—that he is the Arab Prophet foretold in the Torah and the Gospel.

"...and they wish that you go astray..." You, O believers, from the path of truth, just as they have gone astray, and that you join their ranks. Their own error does not suffice them; rather, they love for others to go astray with them. (It is also recited as "an yudillu" [that they might lead you astray] with a ya, with the dad opened or kasra).

"And Allah is most knowing..." Of you.

"...of your enemies." He has informed you of their enmity and revealed their conditions and what they intend for you. So, beware of them; do not seek their advice in your affairs, and do not consult them.

"And sufficient is Allah as an ally, and sufficient is Allah as a helper." Trust in His guardianship and His help instead of theirs. Do not concern yourselves with them, for Allah will grant you victory over them and will suffice you against their plotting.
