Surah Ghafir 40:27

ﱕ ﱖ ﱗ ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ ﱜ ﱝ ﱞ ﱟ ﱠ ﱡ

But Moses said, "Indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Account."

Ghafir: (27) And Moses said, "Indeed, I have sought refuge..."

When Moses (peace be upon him) heard of what Pharaoh had planned regarding his murder, he said to his people:

"Indeed, I have sought refuge" in Allah, who is my Lord and your Lord. His saying "and your Lord" serves to urge them to follow his example, so that they may seek refuge in Allah as he did, and rely upon Him as he relied upon Him.

He said, "from every arrogant one" so that his seeking of refuge would encompass Pharaoh and other tyrants. It is also a form of allusion (ta'rid), which is more eloquent. By "arrogance," he meant the refusal to submit to the Truth; this is the vilest form of arrogance, the clearest evidence of its possessor's baseness and lowliness, and a sign of his extreme oppression and tyranny.

He said, "who does not believe in the Day of Account," because when arrogance, the denial of recompense, and a lack of concern for the consequences combine in a man, he has perfected the causes of cruelty and audacity against Allah and His servants, leaving no grave sin uncommitted.

Note: "‘udhtu" (I sought refuge) and "ladhtu" (I took shelter) are synonymous. It was also recited as "‘attu" (with assimilation).

(28) And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith said, "Do you kill a man because he says, 'My Lord is Allah' while he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? And if he should be lying, then upon him is [the consequence of] his lie; but if he should be truthful, there will strike you some of what he promises you. Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar."
