Tafsir
Verse range: 40:38-39
"And the one who believed said..."
He said: {I will guide you to the path of right conduct}. He summarized it for them, then explained it. He began by disparaging the worldly life and belittling its status, because clinging to it is the root of all evil, from which branches out everything that leads to the wrath of Allah and brings about misery in the end.
He followed this by magnifying the Hereafter and revealing its true nature—that it is the true home and the place of settlement. He mentioned deeds, both evil and good, and the consequence of each, to discourage them from what destroys and to encourage them toward what brings one near [to Allah].
Then, he balanced the two calls: the call to the religion of Allah, the fruit of which is salvation, and their call to take partners [with Allah], the consequence of which is the Fire. He warned, cautioned, exerted himself in that, and gathered all his efforts. It is no wonder that Allah exempted him from the people of Pharaoh and made him a proof against them and a lesson for those who take heed, which is the saying of the Exalted: {So Allah protected him from the evils of what they plotted, and the people of Pharaoh were enveloped by the worst of the punishment}. In this, there is also clear evidence that the man was from the people of Pharaoh.
Al-Rashad (right conduct) is the opposite of al-ghayy (error). In this, there is an insinuation—resembling an explicit statement—that what Pharaoh and his people are upon is the path of error.
{Whoever does an evil deed will not be recompensed except by the like thereof; but whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - those will enter Paradise, being given provision therein without account.}
