Tafsir
Verse range: 40:49
{To the keepers of Hell}: Those charged with punishing its inhabitants.
If you ask: Why was it not said: "Those in the Fire said to its keepers"?
I say: Because mentioning "Hell" (Jahannam) serves to terrify and horrify. It is also possible that Jahannam refers to the deepest part of the Fire, derived from the expression "a jahnam well," meaning one of great depth. This is also why the poet Al-Nabigha was called Jahnam—due to the belief that he composed poetry with profound depth and insight, as Abu Nuwas said regarding Khalaf al-Ahmar: "A deep abyss of knowledge."
In that deepest part are the most arrogant of the disbelievers. Perhaps the angels assigned to punish them are more likely to have their prayers answered due to their proximity to Allah, which is why the people of the Fire specifically seek their intercession.
{Did your messengers not come to you...?}: This is a binding of the argument and a rebuke, indicating that they left behind the times for supplication and humility, and neglected the means by which Allah answers prayers.
{They said: "Then you call!"}: You yourselves call out. We do not dare to do so, nor do we intercede except under two conditions: that the one interceded for is not a wrongdoer, and that permission for intercession is granted at the appropriate time—which is before the final judgment between the two parties. Their saying "Then you call" is not out of hope for benefit, but to demonstrate their utter despair; for if the prayer of a favored angel is not heard, how could the prayer of a disbeliever be heard?
{Indeed, We will support Our messengers and those who believe in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand—the Day when their excuse will not benefit the wrongdoers, and they will have the curse, and they will have the worst of the home.}
