The people of Noah denied before them and the [disbelieving] factions after them, and every nation intended [a plot] for their messenger to seize him, and they disputed by [using] falsehood to [attempt to] invalidate thereby the truth. So I seized them, and how [terrible] was My penalty.

Ghafir: (5) "The people of Noah denied before them..."

{The Confederates} Those who banded together against the messengers and showed them hostility, namely ‘Ad, Thamud, Pharaoh, and others.

{And every nation intended} From among these nations—the people of Noah and the confederates—{to seize their messenger} It is also read: bi-rasuliha (their messenger). It means to gain power over him, to strike him, and to inflict upon him what they desired of torture or killing. A captive is called an akhidh (seized one).

{So I seized them} Meaning: They intended to seize him, so I made their recompense for that intention to be that I seized them.

{So how was My punishment?} For you pass by their lands and dwellings and witness the traces of that. This is an affirmation that carries the meaning of astonishment.

{And thus the word of your Lord has been justified upon those who disbelieved: that they are the companions of the Fire.}
