Indeed, those who dispute concerning the signs of Allah without [any] authority having come to them - there is not within their breasts except pride, [the extent of] which they cannot reach. So seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Seeing.

Ghafir: 56

{Indeed, there is nothing in their breasts except pride} Meaning: arrogance and self-aggrandizement. It is the desire for precedence and leadership, and that no one should be above them. For this reason, they opposed you and rejected your signs, fearing that you would surpass them and that they would be under your authority, command, and prohibition; for Prophethood encompasses all kingship and leadership.

Alternatively, it means the desire that Prophethood should be theirs instead of yours, out of envy and transgression. This is indicated by the Almighty’s saying: "If it had been good, they would not have preceded us to it" (Al-Ahqaf: 11). Or, it refers to the desire to repel the signs through argumentation.

{They will not reach it} Meaning: they will not reach what their pride necessitates and demands, which is the object of their desire—whether it be leadership, Prophethood, or the repelling of the signs.

It is said: The disputers are the Jews. They used to say, "Our companion, the Messiah son of David, will emerge"—meaning the Dajjal—"and his authority will reach the land and the sea, and rivers will flow with him, and he will be one of the signs of Allah, and thus kingship will return to us." Allah called their wishing for this "pride" and denied that they would ever reach what they wished for.

{So seek refuge in Allah} From the plotting of those who envy you and transgress against you.

{Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing} Of what you say and what they say.

{The Seeing} Of what you do and what they do. He is your helper against them and your protector from their evil.
