Surah Fussilat: 33

{And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah}

  • Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): It is the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), who invited to Islam, {and did righteousness} in what is between him and his Lord, and made Islam his chosen path.
  • Also from him: They are the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).
  • Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): We did not doubt that this verse was revealed regarding the mu'adhdhins (callers to prayer).

The General Meaning: The verse is general for everyone who combines these three qualities:

  1. Being a monotheist who believes in the religion of Islam.
  2. Acting righteously.
  3. Inviting others to it.

They are none other than the class of the learned, the righteous, the people of justice and monotheism, who invite to the religion of Allah.

{And said, "Indeed, I am of the Muslims."} The intent is not merely that he uttered these words, but that he made the religion of Islam his school of thought (madhhab) and his belief. Just as you say, "This is the opinion (qawl) of Abu Hanifa," meaning his school of thought.

Verses 34–35

{And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he were a devoted friend. But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good].}
