And of His signs is that you see the earth stilled, but when We send down upon it rain, it quivers and grows. Indeed, He who has given it life is the Giver of Life to the dead. Indeed, He is over all things competent.

Fussilat: (39) "And of His signs is that you..."

"Al-Khushu‘" (Humility): It is submissiveness and shrinking. It is used metaphorically for the state of the earth when it is barren, containing no vegetation. This is as He described it as hamidah (lifeless) in His saying: "And you see the earth lifeless" (Al-Hajj: 5).

This is the opposite of describing it as ihtizaz (shaking/vibrating) and rabwa (swelling/rising). It is said to "swell" when it becomes fertile and adorned with vegetation, as if it were a person strutting in their finery. Before that, it is like a humiliated person, wretched in state, wearing tattered rags.

It has also been recited as wa-raba’at (and it rose), meaning it ascended, because when vegetation intends to emerge, the earth rises for it.
