Tafsir of Fussilat 41:53-54

Surah Fussilat 41:54

ﳒ ﳓ ﳔ ﳕ ﳖ ﳗ ﳘ ﳙ ﳚ ﳛ ﳜ ﳝ ﳞ

Unquestionably, they are in doubt about the meeting with their Lord. Unquestionably He is, of all things, encompassing.

{We will show them Our signs in the horizons and in themselves}

This refers to what Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He) facilitated for His Messenger (peace be upon him) and the Caliphs after him, and the victory He granted His religion throughout the horizons of the world—the lands of the East and the West in general, and the Arabian Peninsula in particular.

This includes:

  • Conquests the likes of which were never facilitated for any earthly caliphs before them.
  • Victory over tyrants and Persian emperors.
  • Granting their few victory over the many, and empowering their weak over the strong.
  • Performing through their hands matters that transcended the customary and broke the norms.
  • Spreading the call of Islam to the corners of the inhabited world and extending its state to its furthest reaches.

An examination of history and recorded chronicles regarding their experiences and battles reveals wonders. You will not see a single one of their encounters that is not a sign of Allah and one of His proofs. Through these, certainty is strengthened, faith increases, and it becomes clear that the religion of Islam is the religion of Truth, from which none deviates except one who denies his own senses and deceives himself.

Steadfastness and integrity are the attributes of Truth and sincerity, just as wavering and instability are the attributes of fabrication and falsehood. Falsehood has a wind that blows and then settles, and a state that appears and then vanishes.

{Is it not enough concerning your Lord}

"Your Lord" is in the nominative case as the agent of "is enough" (kafa).

{that He is, over all things, a Witness?}

This is a substitute (badal) for it. The meaning is: "Is it not enough for them that your Lord is a Witness over all things?"

The meaning is that this promised manifestation of Allah’s signs in the horizons and in themselves is something they will see and witness. At that point, they will realize that the Qur’an is a revelation from the Knower of the Unseen, who is a Witness over all things—meaning He is All-Aware and Dominant, for whom the unseen and the manifest are equal. This should suffice them as proof that it is the Truth and from Him. Had it not been so, it would not have gained such strength, nor would its bearers have achieved such victory.

It has been recited as fi muriyatin (with a damma), meaning doubt.

{He is encompassing}

He is All-Knowing of the totality of things, their details, their outward aspects, and their inward realities. Nothing of them is hidden from Him, and He will recompense them for their disbelief and their doubt regarding the meeting with their Lord.


From the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "Whoever recites Surah al-Sajdah, Allah will grant him ten good deeds for every letter."
