Ash-Shura: (36) "So whatever you have been given..."

{فَمَا} (So whatever): The first [instance of ma] incorporates the meaning of a conditional, which is why the fa (so) appears in its response, unlike the second [instance].

Regarding the occasion of revelation: It is narrated from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that wealth was gathered for Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he gave it all away in the path of Allah and for charity. The Muslims blamed him for it, and the disbelievers deemed him mistaken, so this [verse] was revealed.

{وَالَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَائِرَ الْإِثْمِ وَالْفَوَاحِشَ وَإِذَا مَا غَضِبُوا هُمْ يَغْفِرُونَ} "And those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, and when they are angry, they forgive."
