Ash-Shura: 45–46
{ خاشعين }
Humbled, diminished, and shrinking due to the humiliation that has befallen them.
Note: The phrase "from humiliation" (من الذل) may be linked to "looking" (ينظرون), and a pause may be placed at "humbled" (خاشعين).
{ ينظرون من طرف خفي }
Meaning: Their looking begins with a weak, hidden movement of their eyelids, stealing glances—just as you see the one condemned to death looking at the sword. This is how one looks at things they detest: they are unable to open their eyelids fully toward them or fill their eyes with the sight, as they would when looking at things they love.
It is also said: They will be gathered blind, seeing only with their hearts, and that is the "looking from a hidden glance." (The former interpretation is more sound).
{ يوم القيامة }
This either relates to "they have lost" (خسروا), in which case the statement of the believers occurs in this world; or it relates to "they say" (قال), meaning: they will say this on the Day of Resurrection when they see them in that state.
{ استجيبوا لربكم من قبل أن يأتى يوم لا مرد له من الله ما لكم من ملجأ يومئذ وما لكم من نكير }
"Respond to your Lord before there comes a Day from Allah which cannot be averted. You will have no refuge that Day, nor will you have any denial."
