Tafsir of Ash-Shura 42:48

Surah Ash-Shura 42:48

ﲈ ﲉ ﲊ ﲋ ﲌ ﲍ ﲎ ﲏ ﲐ ﲑ ﲒ ﲓ ﲔ ﲕ ﲖ ﲗ ﲘ ﲙ ﲚ ﲛ ﲜ ﲝ ﲞ ﲟ ﲠ ﲡ ﲢ ﲣ ﲤ ﲥ

But if they turn away - then We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], over them as a guardian; upon you is only [the duty of] notification. And indeed, when We let man taste mercy from us, he rejoices in it; but if evil afflicts him for what his hands have put forth, then indeed, man is ungrateful.

Ash-Shura: 48

"But if they turn away, then..."

He intended by "the human" (al-insān) the collective, not the individual. This is evidenced by His saying: "And if an evil befalls them," and He did not intend anyone but the criminals; for the befalling of evil due to what their hands have sent forth is only applicable to them.

  • The Mercy: The blessing of health, wealth, and security.
  • The Evil: The affliction of illness, poverty, and fears.
  • The Ungrateful (al-kafūr): One who is excessive in ingratitude. He did not say "if they are ungrateful" (fa-in kafaru), in order to record that this species is marked by the ingratitude of blessings, as He said: "Indeed, mankind is most unjust and ungrateful" (Ibrahim: 34), and "Indeed, mankind is, to his Lord, ungrateful" (Al-Adiyat: 6). The meaning is that he remembers the affliction, forgets the blessings, and belittles them.

"To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He creates what He wills. He gives to whom He wills female [children], and He gives to whom He wills males. Or He makes them [both] males and females, and He renders whom He wills barren. Indeed, He is Knowing and Competent."
