However, I gave enjoyment to these [people of Makkah] and their fathers until there came to them the truth and a clear Messenger.

Tafsir
Verse range: 43:29
{بل متعت هؤلاء} Meaning: The people of Mecca, who are the descendants of Abraham. I granted them longevity and prosperity, so they were deceived by the respite. They became preoccupied with luxury, the pursuit of desires, and obedience to Satan, turning away from the Word of Monotheism.
{حتى جاءهم الحق} Meaning: The Qur’an.
{ورسول مبين} Meaning: One who makes the message clear through the manifest signs he possesses. Yet, they denied him and labeled him a sorcerer, and labeled what he brought as sorcery. Thus, they failed to fulfill what Abraham had hoped for from them.
Note: It is also recited as bal mattaʿnā (We granted enjoyment).
If you ask: What is the interpretation of the recitation mattaʿta (You granted enjoyment) with a fatḥah on the tāʾ?
I say: It is as if Allah, the Exalted, is interjecting regarding His own statement: “And He made it a lasting word among his descendants, that they might return” (Az-Zukhruf: 28). He says: "Nay, I granted them enjoyment—through the longevity and abundance of provision I bestowed upon them—until that very thing distracted them from the Word of Monotheism."
He intended by this an elaboration on their state; for when He grants them an increase in blessings, it is incumbent upon them to make that a cause for increased gratitude and steadfastness in monotheism and faith, not to associate partners with Him and set up rivals.
The analogy for this is a man complaining about the wrongdoing of someone to whom he had been kind, then turning to himself and saying: "You are the cause of this through your kindness and benevolence." His purpose in this speech is to rebuke the wrongdoer, not to disparage his own act of kindness.
