ﱁ ﱂ ﱃ ﱄ ﱅ ﱆ

Indeed, the criminals will be in the punishment of Hell, abiding eternally.

{لا يفتر عنهم} It is not lightened or diminished for them. It is derived from the saying: "The fever fatrat (abated) from him," meaning it subsided slightly and its heat decreased.

{وهم فيه مبلسون} Al-mublis is the one who is despairing, silent with the silence of one who has lost hope for relief. Ad-Dahhak said: "The criminal is placed in a coffin of fire, then it is sealed over him, and he remains therein eternally—neither seeing nor being seen."

{هم} It is a fasl (separator) according to the Basrans, and an imad (support) according to the Kufans. It was recited as "wa-hum fiha" (and they are in it), meaning in the Fire.

{يا مالك} Ali and Ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with them) recited it as "Ya Mal," omitting the kaf for tarkhim (vocative truncation), like the poet’s saying: “O Mal (Malik), the truth is other than what you describe.”

It was said to Ibn Abbas: "Ibn Mas‘ud recited it as 'wa-nadu ya Mal'." He replied: "The people of the Fire are too preoccupied for tarkhim!" Others said: The tarkhim is appropriate because they truncate part of the name due to their weakness and the magnitude of what they are in. Abu al-Sarrar al-Ghanawi recited it as "Ya Malu" with a damma (nominative), as one says "Ya Har" (for Harith).

{ليقض علينا ربك} From the verb qada ‘alayhi (to finish someone off), meaning to cause him to die, as in: “So Moses struck him and finished him off” (Al-Qasas: 15). The meaning is: "Ask your Lord to put an end to us."

If you ask: How can it be said that they cried out "O Malik" after being described as mublisun (despairing)? I say: Those are long eras and extended epochs. Their states fluctuate; they are silent at times due to the overwhelming despair and their knowledge that there is no relief, and they cry out at other times due to the intensity of their suffering.

{ماكثون} Meaning labithun (remaining). It contains a sense of mockery, and the intended meaning is "eternally abiding." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "He only answers them after a thousand years." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Hunger will be cast upon the people of the Fire until it equals the torment they are in. They will say: 'Call Malik!' So they will call out: 'O Malik, let your Lord put an end to us!'"

{لقد جئناكم بالحق} This is the speech of Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He), evidenced by the recitation of those who read it as "Laqad ji'tukum" (I have brought you). It is necessary that the pronoun in "Qala" (He said) refers to Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He). When they asked Malik to ask Allah to put an end to them, Allah answered them with this.

{كارهون} You do not accept it, you recoil from it, and you are repulsed by it; for with falsehood there is ease, and with the truth there is hardship.
