Tafsir of Ad-Dukhan 44:30

{From Pharaoh} This is a substitute (badal) for "the humiliating punishment," as if the punishment itself was the humiliating torment, due to his excess in torturing and degrading them. It is also permissible that the meaning is: "from the humiliating punishment occurring at the hands of Pharaoh."

It has been recited: "From the humiliating torment" (min 'adhābi al-muhīn). The interpretation here is that the phrase "From Pharaoh" implies "from the torment of Pharaoh," such that the "humiliating one" is Pharaoh himself.

In the recitation of Ibn Abbas: "From Pharaoh." When he described the torment of Pharaoh as severe and atrocious, he said "From Pharaoh," meaning: Do you know who he is in his tyranny and devilry? Then he defined his state in that by saying:

{Indeed, he was a tyrant among the transgressors} Meaning: great, of high status, superior among them, and eloquent in his excess. Or, "tyrant" (‘āliyan) meaning arrogant, as in the Almighty’s saying: {Indeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land} (Al-Qasas: 4). And {among the transgressors} is a second predicate, as if it were said: Indeed, he was arrogant and a transgressor.

{And We certainly chose them by knowledge over the worlds. And We gave them of signs that in which there was a clear trial. Indeed, these [people] say:}
