{And what is between them} Meaning: what is between the two categories. Ubayd ibn Umayr recited it as: "And what is between them (feminine plural)."

{Indeed, the Day of Judgement is their appointed time for all} It is recited as mīqātahum (in the accusative case) as the subject of inna, with yawm al-faṣl (the Day of Judgement) as its predicate. Meaning: The appointed time for their reckoning and recompense is the Day of Judgement.

{No ally will avail an ally at all} Meaning: No ally—regardless of whether the alliance is by kinship or otherwise—will avail any other ally in any way, meaning not even a little bit.

{Nor will they be helped} The pronoun refers to the "allies" because, in meaning, they are plural, as the term is used in a general and indefinite sense to encompass every ally.

{Except those whom Allah has mercy upon} This is in the nominative case as a substitute (badal) for the pronoun in yunṣarūn (they will be helped). Meaning: None shall be protected from the punishment except by the mercy of Allah. It is also permissible for it to be in the accusative case as an exception (istithnāʾ).

{Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful} He is the Exalted in Might, from whom no one who disobeys Him can find help; and He is the Merciful to those who obey Him.

{Indeed, the tree of Zaqqum is food for the sinful. Like molten copper, it boils in the bellies, like the boiling of scalding water. "Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire. Then pour over his head from the torment of scalding water. Taste! Indeed, you are the 'exalted,' the 'noble.' Indeed, this is what you used to dispute."}
