And when it was said, 'Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth and the Hour [is coming] - no doubt about it,' you said, 'We know not what is the Hour. We assume only assumption, and we are not convinced.' "

Al-Jathiya: 32

"And when it was said, 'Indeed...'"

It is recited as wa-al-sa‘ata (the Hour) in the accusative case, as a conjunction to al-wa‘d (the promise). It is also recited in the nominative case, as a conjunction to the position of inna and its noun.

{What is the Hour?} Meaning: What thing is the Hour?

If you ask: What is the meaning of {We assume nothing but assumption}? I say: Its origin is nazunnu zannan (we assume an assumption). Its meaning is the affirmation of assumption only. Therefore, the particle of negation (ma) and the exception (illa) were introduced to convey the affirmation of assumption while negating everything else. The negation of everything other than assumption was further emphasized by His saying: {And we are not convinced}.

{The evil deeds of what they did} Meaning: The ugliness of their deeds. Or, the punishments for their evil deeds, as in His saying: {And the retribution for an evil deed is an evil one like it} (Ash-Shura: 45).

{And it will be said, "Today We will forget you, just as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours, and your refuge is the Fire, and for you there are no helpers. That is because you took the signs of Allah in mockery, and the worldly life deluded you." So this Day they will not be brought out from it, nor will they be asked to make amends.}
