Al-Ahqaf: 19

{And for all are degrees from what they have done} Meaning: stations and ranks resulting from the reward of what they have done of good and evil, and because of what they have done of both.

If you ask: How is it said "degrees" (darajat), when it has come [in tradition] that Paradise is "degrees" (darajat) and the Fire is "levels" (darakat)?

I say: It is permissible to say that by way of dominance (taghlib), because each [realm] encompasses both groups.

{And that He may recompense them} (It is also read with a nun: "And that We may recompense them"). This is a cause whose effect is omitted due to the context indicating it. It is as if it were said: "And that He may recompense them for their deeds and not wrong them in their rights." He measured their recompense according to the measure of their deeds, thus making the reward "degrees" and the punishment "levels."

Al-Ahqaf: 20

{And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "You exhausted your good things during your worldly life and enjoyed them, so this Day you will be recompensed with the punishment of humiliation for what you were arrogant upon the earth without right and for what you were defiantly disobedient."}
