Tafsir of Al-Ahqaf 46:35

{Those of determination (ulu al-‘azm)}: Those of diligence, steadfastness, and patience.

{Of (min)}: It is permissible that it is for partitive purposes (tab’id), meaning by "those of determination" some of the prophets. It is said: They are Noah, who was patient with the harm of his people—they would beat him until he fainted; Abraham, with the fire and the slaughter of his son; Isaac, with the slaughter; Jacob, with the loss of his son and the departure of his sight; Joseph, with the well and the prison; Job, with his affliction; Moses, to whom his people said, "We are surely overtaken," and he replied, "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me"; David, who wept for his sin for forty years; and Jesus, who did not place one brick upon another, saying, "It is a bridge, so cross over it and do not build upon it."

God Almighty said regarding Adam: {And We did not find in him determination} (Ta-Ha: 115), and regarding Jonah: {And do not be like the companion of the fish} (Al-Qalam: 48).

It is also permissible that it is for clarification (bayan), in which case "those of determination" would be a description of all the messengers.

{And do not hasten}: For the disbelievers of Quraysh regarding the punishment; meaning: do not pray for its hastening for them, for it will inevitably descend upon them, even if it is delayed. They will then perceive the duration of their stay in the world as if it were:

{An hour of a day}.

{A notification (balagh)}: Meaning, this which you have been admonished with is sufficient as an admonition. Or, this is a notification from the Messenger, peace be upon him.

{So will any be destroyed}: Except those who deviate from taking heed of it and acting according to its requirements. The meaning of "notification" is supported by the reading of those who read: ballagha (He has notified).

• It is also read as balaghan (as a notification), meaning: "Notify them of a notification."
• It is also read as yuhlak (passive) and yahlik (active), from halaka and halika.
• And nuhliku (We destroy) with the nun.

{Except the defiantly disobedient people}.

From the Messenger of God, peace be upon him: "Whoever recites Surah Al-Ahqaf, ten good deeds will be written for him for every grain of sand in the world."
