Surah Al-Ahqaf 46:4

ﲛ ﲜ ﲝ ﲞ ﲟ ﲠ ﲡ ﲢ ﲣ ﲤ ﲥ ﲦ ﲧ ﲨ ﲩ ﲪ ﲫ ﲬ ﲭ ﲮ ﲯ ﲰ ﲱ ﲲ ﲳ ﲴ ﲵ ﲶ ﲷ ﲸ

Say, [O Muhammad], "Have you considered that which you invoke besides Allah? Show me what they have created of the earth; or did they have partnership in [creation of] the heavens? Bring me a scripture [revealed] before this or a [remaining] trace of knowledge, if you should be truthful."

Al-Ahqaf: (4) Say, "Have you considered..."

{With a scripture from before this} Meaning: From before this Book, which is the Qur’an. It implies that this Book speaks of monotheism and the invalidation of polytheism. There is no book revealed before it from the books of God that does not speak to the same effect. So, bring a single book revealed before it that testifies to the validity of what you are upon regarding the worship of other than God.

{Or a remnant of knowledge} Meaning: Or a remainder of knowledge left over for you from the sciences of the ancients. This is derived from their saying: "The she-camel became fat upon an atharah (remnant) of fat," meaning: upon a remainder of fat that remained from fat that had previously existed.

It is also read as atharah (أثرة), meaning: from something you have been favored with and singled out for, from knowledge that no one else encompasses.

It is also read as atharah (أثرة) with the three vowel movements (fatha, kasra, damma) on the hamza while keeping the tha’ quiescent:

  • Al-ithrah (الإثرة): With a kasra, it has the same meaning as al-atharah.
  • Al-atharah (الأثرة): With a fatha, it is the instance (nomen vicis) of the infinitive athara al-hadith (to narrate a tradition).
  • Al-uthrah (الأثرة): With a damma, it is the noun for that which is narrated (ma yu’thar), similar to khutbah (sermon), which is the noun for that which is preached.

{And who is more astray than he who calls upon others besides God—those who will not answer him until the Day of Resurrection, and they are, of their invocation, unaware?}
