{Bayyinat} (clear proofs): The plural of bayyinah, which is the argument and the witness. Or, it means "clear, clarifying things."

The lam (preposition "for") in {for the truth} is like the lam in His saying: “And those who disbelieved said to those who believed, ‘If it were good...’” (Al-Ahqaf: 11). That is: for the sake of the truth and for the sake of those who believed.

The intended meaning of "the truth" is the verses, and "those who disbelieved" refers to those to whom the verses were recited. The two explicit nouns were used in place of pronouns to record their disbelief against them and to characterize those to whom the truth was recited.

{When it came to them} means: They confronted it with denial the moment it reached them, the very first time they heard it, without any deliberation or reconsideration.

It is part of their obstinacy and injustice that they called it "clear magic"—something whose falsehood is manifest, with no ambiguity about it.

{Or do they say, "He has invented it"? Say, "If I have invented it, then you have no power to help me against Allah. He is most knowing of that in which you are engaged. Sufficient is He as Witness between me and you, and He is the Forgiving, the Merciful."}
