Muhammad: (10) Have they not traveled through...

"Destroyed them" (دمره): It means He annihilated them. "Destroyed upon them" (دمر عليه) means He annihilated that which pertains to them. The meaning is: Allah destroyed upon them that which belonged to them—their own selves, their wealth, their children, and everything that was theirs.

"And for the disbelievers are the likes thereof" (وللكافرين أمثالها): The pronoun refers to the aforementioned consequence (the destruction), or to the act of annihilation itself, because the word "destruction" implies it. Alternatively, it refers to the "practice" (Sunnah), based on His saying, Exalted and Majestic is He: "The practice of Allah with those who have passed on before" (Al-Ahzab: 38/62).

"That is because Allah is the Protector of those who have believed, and because the disbelievers have no protector."
