Muhammad: (11) That is because Allah...

{The Protector of those who believe} Their guardian and helper. In the reading of Ibn Mas‘ud, it is: "The guardian of those who believe."

It is narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was in the mountain pass on the day of Uhud, while wounds had spread among them, and it was regarding this that [the verse] was revealed. The polytheists called out: "Rise, Hubal!" The Muslims replied: "Allah is Higher and More Majestic." The polytheists called out: "A day for a day, and war is a seesaw; we have al-‘Uzza, and you have no ‘Uzza!" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Say: Allah is our Protector, and you have no protector. The dead are not the same; our dead are alive, provided for, while your dead are in the Fire, being punished."

If you ask: Does the Almighty’s saying, {And they are returned to Allah, their True Protector} (Yunus: 30), contradict this verse?

I say: There is no contradiction between them. Allah is the Protector of all His servants in the sense that He is their Lord and the Master of their affairs. However, in the sense of being the "Helper," He is the Protector of the believers exclusively.

{Indeed, Allah will admit those who have believed and done righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow, while those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as grazing livestock eat, and the Fire is a residence for them.}
