Surah Muhammad: 31

{ ولنبلونكم حتى نعلم }

{ أخباركم }: That which is narrated about you and that which is reported regarding your deeds, so that their goodness may be distinguished from their ugliness. This is because the report corresponds to the one being reported upon: if it is good, then it is good; and if it is ugly, then it is ugly.

Ya‘qub read it as wa-nablu (with a quiescent waw), meaning: "And We test your reports." It was also recited as wa-li-yabluwannakum wa-ya‘lama (with a ya).

It is narrated from al-Fudayl that whenever he recited this verse, he would weep and say: "O Allah, do not test us, for if You test us, You will expose us, tear down our veils, and punish us."

{ إن الذين كفروا وصدوا عن سبيل الله وشآقوا الرسول من بعد ما تبين لهم الهدى لن يضروا الله شيئا وسيحبط أعمالهم }
