Tafsir of Muhammad 47:35

{فلا تهنوا} Do not become weak, do not lose heart, and do not be humiliated before the enemy.

{وتدعوا إلى السلم} And do not call for peace. It is also recited as al-salm (meaning reconciliation).

{وأنتم الأعلون} Meaning: You are the victors and the conquerors.

{والله معكم} Meaning: He is your helper.

• Qatada said: Do not be the first of the two parties to plead with the other for a truce.
• Grammatical note: It is recited as la tad‘u (do not call). Idda‘a al-qawm and tada‘aw are used when they call upon one another, similar to saying irtamu al-sayd (they shot at the game) and taramawhu. Tad‘u is jussive because it falls under the ruling of the prohibition, or it is in the accusative case due to an implied an.
• Comparison: The phrase {And you are the superior ones} is like the Almighty’s saying: {Indeed, it is you who are the superior} (Ta-Ha: 68).

{ولن يتركم} Derived from watartu al-rajul (I have "watar-ed" a man), which is said when you have killed one of his children, brothers, or close kin, or when you have robbed him. Its reality is: you have left him alone, stripped of his kin or his wealth, derived from al-watr (the odd/single number). Thus, the wasting of a worker’s deeds and the withholding of his reward is likened to the watr of the one who inflicts loss. This is among the most eloquent of speech.

• Example: The saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Whoever misses the Afternoon Prayer, it is as if he has been wutira (deprived of) his family and his wealth," meaning he has been separated from them through killing or plunder.

{إنما الحياة الدنيا لعب ولهو...} "The life of this world is but play and amusement. But if you believe and fear Allah, He will give you your rewards and will not ask you for your possessions. If He were to ask you for them and press you, you would be stingy, and He would bring out your grudges. Here you are—those invited to spend in the cause of Allah—yet among you are those who are stingy. And whoever is stingy is only stingy against himself. And Allah is the Free of need, while you are the needy. And if you turn away, He will replace you with another people; then they will not be the likes of you."
