Tafsir
Verse range: 47:8-9
{And those who disbelieved} It is grammatically possible for it to be in the nominative case (rafʿ) as an initial subject (mubtadaʾ), or in the accusative case (naṣb) governed by the verb implied by {so let there be ruin for them}—as if He said: "May ruin befall those who disbelieved."
If you ask: To what is the phrase {and He has led their deeds astray} conjoined? I say: It is conjoined to the verb that governs taʿsan (ruin). The meaning is: "He has decreed ruin for them," or "He has ordained ruin for them."
Taʿsan (ruin) for someone is the opposite of laʿan (a prayer for recovery/rising). Al-Aʿsha said:
So ruin is more fitting for it than that I should say "rise."
He means: stumbling and falling are closer to it than rising and standing firm.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: He means killing in this world, and falling into the Fire in the Hereafter.
{They disliked} They disliked the Quran and the obligations and rulings that Allah revealed within it, because they had become accustomed to negligence and giving free rein to their desires and pleasures; thus, it became difficult and burdensome for them.
{Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? Allah destroyed them, and for the disbelievers is the like thereof.}
