But you thought that the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families, ever, and that was made pleasing in your hearts. And you assumed an assumption of evil and became a people ruined."
Tafsir

"Nay, you thought..."
"To their families" (ilā ahlihim) and "and it was made fair-seeming" (wa-zuyyina) have been read [in variant recitations] in the active voice, attributing the action to the agent—either Satan or Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He). Both are mentioned in the Qur’an: "And Satan made their deeds fair-seeming to them" (al-Naml: 24) and "And Satan made their deeds fair-seeming to them" (al-Naml: 4).
"Ruined" (al-būr): Derived from bāra (to perish), just as al-halāk (destruction) is derived from halaka (to perish), both in structure and meaning. For this reason, it is used as a descriptor for the singular, plural, masculine, and feminine. It is also permissible that it is the plural of bā’ir (ruined), like ‘ā’idh (refuge-seeker) and ‘ūdh.
The meaning: You were a people corrupt in your selves, your hearts, and your intentions, in whom there is no good. Or, you were perishing in the sight of Allah, deserving of His wrath and His punishment.
"And whoever does not believe in Allah and His Messenger—then indeed, We have prepared for the disbelievers a Blaze."
