{وَهُوَ الَّذِي كَفَّ أَيْدِيَهُمْ عَنكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ عَنْهُم بِبَطْنِ مَكَّةَ}

{أَيْدِيَهُمْ}: The hands of the people of Mecca. That is: He decreed a cessation and a barrier between them and you.

[Context of the Event]: This occurred after He granted you victory and dominance over them, and that was on the day of the Conquest (al-Fath). Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him) used this as evidence that Mecca was conquered by force (‘anwatan), not by treaty (sulhan).

[Alternative Views]: It is said that this occurred during the expedition of al-Hudaybiyyah, based on the report that ‘Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl went out with five hundred men, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent those who defeated them and drove them into the walls of Mecca.

[Ibn Abbas’s Account]: It is narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Allah caused the Muslims to prevail over them with stones until they drove them into the houses.

[Qira’at]: It is recited as ta‘malun (you do) with both the ta (second person) and the ya (third person).

{هُمُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَصَدُّوكُمْ عَنِ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ وَالْهَدْيَ مَعْكُوفًا أَن يَبْلُغَ مَحِلَّهُ ۚ وَلَوْلَا رِجَالٌ مُّؤْمِنُونَ وَنِسَاءٌ مُّؤْمِنَاتٌ لَّمْ تَعْلَمُوهُمْ أَن تَطَئُوهُمْ فَتُصِيبَكُم مِّنْهُم مَّعَرَّةٌ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ ۖ لِّيُدْخِلَ اللَّهُ فِي رَحْمَتِهِ مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ لَوْ تَزَيَّلُوا لَعَذَّبْنَا الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا}
