Al-Fath: 26
"When those who disbelieved..."
{إذ} (When): It is permissible for the preceding verb to govern it—meaning: "We would have punished them" or "they hindered you from the Sacred Mosque" at that time. It may also be in the accusative case by the implied verb "Remember."
The meaning of the "zeal" (hamiyyah) of those who disbelieved and the "tranquility" (sakinah) of the believers:
- Zeal (Hamiyyah): Pride and disdain.
- Tranquility (Sakinah): Composure and dignity.
The account: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) arrived at al-Hudaybiyyah, the Quraysh sent Suhayl ibn ‘Amr, Huwaytib ibn ‘Abd al-‘Uzza, and Mikraz ibn Hafs to propose that he return that year, in exchange for which they would clear Mecca for him for three days the following year. He agreed, and they began to write a treaty.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said to ‘Ali (ra): "Write: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful." Suhayl and his companions said: "We do not recognize this; write: In Your name, O Allah."
He then said: "Write: This is what the Messenger of Allah has agreed upon with the people of Mecca." They replied: "If we knew you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have hindered you from the House nor fought you. Write: This is what Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah has agreed upon with the people of Mecca."
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Write what they wish, for I testify that I am the Messenger of Allah, and I am Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah." The Muslims intended to refuse and were repulsed by this, so Allah sent down tranquility upon His Messenger and the believers, and they became dignified and forbearing.
{كلمة التقوى} (The word of piety): It is "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" and "Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." Allah chose this for His Prophet and those with him—the people of goodness, those deserving of it, and those more entitled to guidance than others.
- It is also said: It is the testimony of faith (Shahada).
- Al-Hasan (ra) said: It is fulfilling the covenant.
- The meaning of its attribution to "piety" is that it is the cause and foundation of piety.
- It is also said: It means "the word of the people of piety."
In the codex of al-Harith ibn Suwayd (a companion of ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud), it is written: "...and they were the people of it and more entitled to it." (This is the same codex that was buried during the days of al-Hajjaj).

"Allah has certainly shown to His Messenger the vision in truth: you will surely enter the Sacred Mosque, if Allah wills, in safety, with your heads shaved and [hair] shortened, not fearing [anyone]. He knew what you did not know and has arranged [for you] besides that a conquest near [at hand]."
