And when it is said to them, "Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger," they say, "Sufficient for us is that upon which we found our fathers." Even though their fathers knew nothing, nor were they guided?

"And when it is said to them..."

The Waw in His saying: "Even if their fathers..."

It is the Waw of state (hal), upon which the interrogative particle of denial (hamzat al-inkar) has entered. Its estimation is: "Do they follow them, even if their fathers..."

"Do not know anything, and are not guided."

The meaning is that following [others] is only valid when directed toward one who is knowledgeable and guided, and such guidance is only known through proof (hujjah).
