ﱉ ﱊ ﱋ ﱌ ﱍ ﱎ ﱏ ﱐ ﱑ ﱒ ﱓ ﱔ ﱕ ﱖ ﱗ ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ ﱜ ﱝ ﱞ ﱟ ﱠ ﱡ
O you who have believed, remember the favor of Allah upon you when a people determined to extend their hands [in aggression] against you, but He withheld their hands from you; and fear Allah. And upon Allah let the believers rely.
Tafsir
Verse range: 5:11
[344] It is narrated: The polytheists saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his companions stand for the Dhuhr prayer together at Usfan during the expedition of Dhu Amr. When they finished, the polytheists regretted not having attacked them while they were prostrate. They said, "They have another prayer coming up that is dearer to them than their own fathers and sons," referring to the Asr prayer. They intended to strike them when they stood for it. Then, Gabriel descended with the [revelation of the] Prayer of Fear.

[345] It is narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to the Banu Qurayza, accompanied by the two Shaykhs [Abu Bakr and Umar] and Ali (may Allah be pleased with them), to request blood money for two Muslims whom Amr ibn Umayyah al-Damri had killed by mistake, thinking they were polytheists. They said, "Yes, O Abu al-Qasim, sit until we feed you and provide you with the loan." They seated him in a portico and plotted to assassinate him. Amr ibn Jahash intended to drop a large millstone upon him, but Allah restrained his hand. Gabriel descended, informed him [of the plot], and he departed.

[346] It is said: He [the Prophet] stopped at a place, and the people dispersed among the thorny trees to seek shade. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) hung his sword on a tree. A Bedouin came, drew the sword of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and approached him, saying, "Who will protect you from me?" He replied, "Allah" (he said it three times). The Bedouin sheathed the sword. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) then called his companions and informed them, but he refused to punish him.
(Authentic).
Linguistic Note: It is said: "He extended his tongue toward him" if he insulted him, and "He extended his hand toward him" if he struck him.
Regarding the verse: "And they extend their hands and their tongues against you with evil" (Al-Mumtahanah: 2). The meaning of "extending the hand" is reaching out toward the one being struck. Do you not see their saying, "So-and-so is basit al-ba' (wide-reaching/generous) and madid al-ba'," which carries the same meaning?
Regarding the verse: "And He restrained their hands from you" (Al-Fath: 24). It means He prevented them from being extended toward you.
