Tafsir of Al-Ma'idah 5:116

Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:116

ﱬ ﱭ ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ ﱵ ﱶ ﱷ ﱸ ﱹ ﱺ ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ ﱾ ﱿ ﲀ ﲁ ﲂ ﲃ ﲄ ﲅ ﲆ ﲇ ﲈ ﲉ ﲊ ﲋ ﲌ ﲍ ﲎ ﲏ ﲐ ﲑ ﲒ ﲓ ﲔ ﲕ ﲖ ﲗ ﲘ ﲙ ﲚ ﲛ

And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?'" He will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen.

Al-Ma'idah: 116

"Exalted are You" Far be it from You that You should have a partner.

"It was not for me" It was not appropriate for me.

"To say" To utter a statement that I have no right to say.

"What is in my self" What is in my heart. The meaning is: You know what I know, but I do not know what You know. However, he employed the path of mushakala (stylistic correspondence) in his speech—which is among the most eloquent forms of discourse—and it was clarified by saying:

"In Your Self" In response to his saying "in my self."

"Indeed, it is You who is the Knower of the unseen" This is an affirmation for both preceding clauses together, because what souls contain is part of the unseen, and because the knowledge of the Knower of the unseen is something that no one else’s knowledge can reach.
