Tafsir of Al-Ma'idah 5:120

[Linguistic Inquiry] If you ask: "The heavens and the earth contain both rational beings and others; why was the masculine plural (used for rational beings) not prioritized, such that it would be said 'whoever is in them' (man fīhinna)?"

I reply: The word "what" (mā) encompasses all categories in a general, inclusive manner. Do you not see that when you see a figure from afar, you ask "What is it?" (mā huwa) before you know whether it is a rational being or otherwise? Thus, it is more appropriate for intending generality.

[Hadith] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him):

"Whoever recites Surah al-Ma'idah is granted ten good deeds, ten bad deeds are erased from him, and he is raised ten degrees for every Jew and Christian breathing in this world."
