Al-Ma'idah: 62

"And you see many of them..."

"Al-ithm" (sin): It is lying, as evidenced by the Almighty’s words regarding their speech. "Al-'udwan" (transgression): It is injustice. It is also said: Al-ithm is the word of polytheism and their saying "Ezra is the son of God." It is also said: Al-ithm is that which is specific to them, and al-'udwan is that which extends from them to others.

"Al-musara'ah" (hastening): To begin something with speed.

"As-suht" (ill-gotten gain): "How wretched is what they have been doing." It is as if He has designated the sinner as one who "practices" (makes) abominations. For not every doer is called a "maker" (practitioner), nor is every act called a "practice" (craft), unless one is established in it, trained in it, and it is attributed to him.

The meaning here is that the one who commits a sin has desire with him, which calls him to it and carries him to commit it. As for the one who forbids it, he has no desire with him in the act of another. Thus, if he neglects to forbid it, he is in a worse state than the one who commits it.

By my life, this verse cuts the listener to the core and rebukes the scholars for their negligence. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "It is the most severe verse in the Quran." Ad-Dahhak said: "There is no verse in the Quran more fearful to me than this one."

"And the Jews say, 'The hand of Allah is chained.' Chained are their hands, and cursed are they for what they say. Rather, both His hands are extended; He spends however He wills. And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. And We have cast among them animosity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. Every time they kindled the fire of war, Allah extinguished it. And they strive throughout the land [causing] corruption, and Allah does not like the corrupters."
