Tafsir
Verse range: 5:76
"Say: Do you worship besides Allah..."
"What has no power..." This refers to ‘Isa (Jesus). It means: something that cannot harm you in the way Allah harms you with calamities and disasters regarding your souls and wealth, nor can it benefit you in the way He benefits you with physical health, abundance, and prosperity. Furthermore, since all harm and benefit that humans are capable of is only by Allah’s enabling and empowering, it is as if [‘Isa] possesses nothing of it at all.
This is a definitive proof that his status is incompatible with Lordship, as it establishes that he possesses no power to harm or benefit.
The attribute of the Lord is that He must be capable of all things, with nothing that is decreed falling outside of His power.
"And Allah is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." This is connected to "Do you worship?" It means: Do you associate partners with Allah and not fear Him, while He is the One who hears what you say and knows what you believe? Or, do you worship the incapable, while Allah is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, who is truly capable of hearing every audible thing and knowing every knowable thing? He could not be such unless He were Living and All-Powerful.
