Al-Ma'idah: 77
This is an adjective describing the verbal noun (the act of exceeding). It means: Do not exceed the limits in your religion with an excess that is "other than the truth," meaning a false excess.
For excess in religion is of two types:
- A truthful excess: This is to investigate its realities, examine its furthest meanings, and strive to acquire its proofs, just as the theologians (Mutakallimun) from the People of Justice and Monotheism—may God be pleased with them—do.
- A false excess: This is to overstep the truth and bypass it by turning away from the evidence and following doubts, just as the people of whims and innovations do.
"They have already gone astray before"

"And have gone astray"

"From the right path"
When they denied him, envied him, and acted insolently toward him.
