ﱦ ﱧ ﱨ ﱩ ﱪ ﱫ ﱬ ﱭ ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ ﱵ ﱶ ﱷ ﱸ ﱹ ﱺ ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ ﱾ
There is not upon those who believe and do righteousness [any] blame concerning what they have eaten [in the past] if they [now] fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds, and then fear Allah and believe, and then fear Allah and do good; and Allah loves the doers of good.
Tafsir
Verse range: 5:93
"There is no blame upon those..."
The removal of blame from the believers regarding anything they consume of delightful and desirable foods.
"...if they fear God..." Regarding what He has forbidden them of those things.
"...and believe..." And remain steadfast in faith and righteous deeds, and increase in them.
"...then fear God and believe..." Then remain steadfast in piety and faith.
"...then fear God and do good..." Then remain steadfast in avoiding sins and perfecting their deeds, or doing good to people and comforting them with the good things God has provided them.
It is said: When the prohibition of wine was revealed, the Companions said: "O Messenger of God, what about our brothers who died while they were drinking wine and consuming the wealth of gambling?" So this was revealed.
(Note: Ahmad 2:351 records this from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah in a more complete form, and Al-Haythami mentioned it in Al-Majma' 8075).
This means that there is no blame upon the believers for anything they consume of permissible things, provided they fear the forbidden, then fear and believe, then fear and do good. This is a praise of their state regarding faith, piety, and excellence.
An example of this: If it is said to you, "Is there any blame upon Zayd for what he did?" and you know that the act is permissible, you say: "There is no blame upon anyone for what is permissible if they fear the forbidden, are believers, and are doers of good." By this, you mean that Zayd is pious, a believer, and a doer of good, and that he is not held accountable for what he did.
