Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:97

ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ ﱜ ﱝ ﱞ ﱟ ﱠ ﱡ ﱢ ﱣ ﱤ ﱥ ﱦ ﱧ ﱨ ﱩ ﱪ ﱫ ﱬ ﱭ ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ

Allah has made the Ka'bah, the Sacred House, standing for the people and [has sanctified] the sacred months and the sacrificial animals and the garlands [by which they are identified]. That is so you may know that Allah knows what is in the heavens and what is in the earth and that Allah is Knowing of all things.

Al-Ma'idah: 97–98

"God has made the Kaaba..."

[The Sacred House] An appositive (ʿaṭf bayān) used for the purpose of praise, not for clarification, just as an adjective may function in this manner.

[A support for the people] A means of revitalization for them in their religious and worldly affairs; a rising toward their goals and objectives in their livelihood and their afterlife, due to the completion of their Hajj, their Umrah, their trade, and various other benefits.

  • From ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ: "If they were to abandon it for a single year, they would not be granted respite, nor would they be delayed."

[And the Sacred Month] The month in which the Hajj is performed, which is Dhū al-Ḥijjah. Because of its distinction among the months by the establishment of the Hajj season within it, it possesses a status that God Almighty has made known. It is also said that it refers to the category of the Sacred Months in general.

[And the sacrificial animals and the garlands] Specifically those that are garlanded, particularly the camels (al-budn), because the reward for them is greater and the splendor of the Hajj is more manifest with them.

[That is] A reference to God making the Kaaba a support for the people, or to what was mentioned regarding the preservation of the sanctity of the iḥrām by abstaining from hunting and other prohibitions.

[So that you may know that God knows] Everything. He is All-Knowing of what benefits you and what revitalizes you among the things He has commanded you and charged you with.

[Severe in punishment] To those who violate His sacred prohibitions.

[Forgiving, Merciful] To those who uphold them.
