Surah Qaf 50:26

ﲝ ﲞ ﲟ ﲠ ﲡ ﲢ ﲣ ﲤ ﲥ ﲦ

Who made [as equal] with Allah another deity; then throw him into the severe punishment."

Qaf (24–26): "Cast into Hell..."

{ألقيا} (Cast [dual]): An address from Allah, the Exalted, to the two aforementioned angels: the Driver (al-sa’iq) and the Witness (al-shahid).

It is also permissible that it is an address to a single person, based on two views:

  1. The view of al-Mubarrad: That the dual form of the agent has been treated as the dual form of the verb due to their unity, as if it were said: "Cast, cast" (alq, alq) for emphasis.
  2. The Arabs were most commonly accompanied by two people, so it became frequent on their tongues to say: "My two friends," "My two companions," "Stop [dual]," and "Help [dual]," until they addressed a single person with the dual address. It is narrated that al-Hajjaj used to say: "O my two guards, strike his neck."

Al-Hasan read it as alqin (with the light nun). It is also possible that the alif in alqiya is a substitute for the nun, treating the state of connection (wasl) like the state of pause (waqf).

{عنيد} (Obstinate): One who is antagonistic, distancing himself from the truth, and hostile toward its people.

{مناع للخير} (Preventer of good): One who frequently withholds wealth from its rightful dues, having made this his habit, never spending anything from it at all. Or, one who prevents the genus of "good" from reaching those who deserve it, standing between it and them. It is said this was revealed regarding al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, who used to prevent his nephews from Islam, saying: "Whoever enters it with you, I will never benefit him with any good as long as I live."

{معتد} (Transgressor): An oppressor who oversteps the truth.

{مريب} (Doubter): One who is skeptical regarding Allah and His religion.

{الذى جعل} (The one who set up...): This is a nominal sentence (mubtada') containing the meaning of a conditional, which is why it is answered with the fa (in fa-alqiyahu). It is also permissible for alladhi ja'ala to be in the accusative case as a substitute (badal) for kull kaffar (every disbeliever), in which case fa-alqiyahu would be a repetition for emphasis.


{قال قرينه ربنا ما أطغيته ولكن كان في ضلال بعيد} "His companion will say: 'Our Lord, I did not make him transgress, but he was in deep error.'"
