Tafsir of Qaf 50:27

"His companion said: 'Our Lord, I did not make him transgress...'"

If you ask: Why is this sentence devoid of the waw (conjunction), while it was introduced in the previous one?

I say: Because it is a new beginning (isti'naf), just as sentences are initiated in the narration of dialogues, as you have seen in the narration of the dialogue between Moses and Pharaoh.

If you ask: Where is the dialogue here?

I say: When his companion said, "This is what I have ready" (Qaf: 23), followed by his saying, "His companion said: 'Our Lord, I did not make him transgress,'" and then followed by, "Do not dispute before Me" (Qaf: 28)—it is understood that there was a dialogue from the disbeliever, but it was omitted because what precedes it indicates it. It is as if he said: "Lord, he made me transgress," so his companion replied: "Our Lord, I did not make him transgress."

As for the first sentence, it is mandatory to connect it with the waw to indicate the combination of its meaning with the meaning of what preceded it in occurrence—namely, the arrival of every soul with the two angels, and the statement of his companion.

"I did not make him transgress" means: I did not cause him to be a transgressor, nor did I cast him into transgression. Rather, he transgressed and chose misguidance over guidance, similar to the Almighty’s saying: "And I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me" (Ibrahim: 22).

"[Allah] said: 'Do not dispute before Me, while I had already presented to you the warning. The word is not changed with Me, and I am not ever unjust to the servants.'"
