Tafsir

Al-Kashshaf

Verse range: 50:30

Open in Qurani

Qaf (30): "On the Day We say to Hell..."

Readings:

  • "Naqūl" (We say): Read with both nūn (We) and yā’ (He).
  • Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr: Narrated as "On the Day Allah says to Hell."
  • Ibn Mas‘ūd and al-Ḥasan: Read as "Yuqāl" (It is said).

Grammatical Analysis:

  • The word Yawm (Day) is in the accusative case (naṣb) due to an implied verb, such as "Remember" or "Warn."
  • It may also be in the accusative case due to the verb "blown" (nufikha), as if the text meant: "And the Trumpet shall be blown on the Day We say to Hell." In this interpretation, the "that" (dhālika) in the following verses refers to the Day We say, and there is no need to assume an omitted genitive construction (muḍāf).

The Questioning of Hell:

  • The questioning of Hell and its response is a form of imagery (takhayyul) intended to depict the meaning in the heart and solidify it. It contains two meanings:
    1. Fullness: That it becomes full despite its vastness and the distance of its borders, such that nothing more can fit, fulfilling His saying: "I will surely fill Hell" (al-Sajdah: 13).
    2. Capacity: That it is so vast that even after those who enter it have entered, there remains space for more.

"Is there any more?":

  • It may be an expression of seeking more entrants, marveling at the sheer number of them, or a demand for more out of rage against the sinners.
  • Mazīd (more) is either an infinitive (maṣdar)—like maḥīd or mamīd—or a passive participle (ism maf‘ūl)—like mabī‘.

{ And Paradise will be brought near to the righteous, not far. This is what you were promised for every returner [to Allah], keeper [of His covenant]. Who feared the Most Merciful in the unseen and came with a heart returning [in repentance]. Enter it in peace; this is the Day of Eternity. They will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more. }
