Adh-Dhariyat: (40) "So We seized him and his soldiers and cast them..."

{ مليم } (The Blameworthy): One who brings about that for which he is blamed, due to his disbelief and stubbornness. The sentence, along with the waw (conjunction), constitutes a circumstantial state (hal) for the pronoun in "So We seized him."

If you ask: How is the Prophet of God, Jonah (peace be upon him), described with the same description as Pharaoh in the Almighty’s saying: "Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy" (As-Saffat: 142)?

I say: The causes of blame differ, and according to their differences, the degrees of blame vary. The perpetrator of a major sin is blamed according to its magnitude, and likewise the perpetrator of a minor sin. Do you not see the Almighty’s saying: "And they disobeyed their messengers" (Hud: 59), and "And Adam disobeyed his Lord" (Ta-Ha: 121)? This is because both major and minor sins are gathered under the name of "disobedience," just as they are gathered under the names of "the ugly" (al-qabih) and "the evil" (as-sayyi'ah).

{ And in 'Ad, when We sent against them the barren wind. It left nothing that it came upon, but made it like the decayed ruins. }
