{ وَالطُّورِ } The mountain upon which God spoke to Moses, located in Midian.

{ وَكِتَابٍ مَّسْطُورٍ * فِي رَقٍّ مَّنشُورٍ } * **Al-Raqq:** The parchment or the hide upon which writing is inscribed. * **The Book:** It is said to be the book in which deeds are recorded, as God says: *"And We will bring forth for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open"* (Al-Isra: 13). * It is also said to be what God wrote for Moses while he heard the scratching of the Pen. * It is also said to be the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawh al-Mahfuz). * It is also said to be the Qur’an. It is used in the indefinite form because it is a specific book distinguished from all other types of books, similar to His saying: *"And a soul and He who proportioned it"* (Al-Shams: 7).

{ وَالْبَيْتِ الْمَعْمُورِ } The *Darah* (sanctuary) in the fourth heaven. Its "inhabitation" refers to the multitude of angels who frequent it. It is also said to be the Ka’bah, because it is inhabited by pilgrims, visitors, and those who reside there.

{ وَالسَّقْفِ الْمَرْفُوعِ } The sky.

{ وَالْبَحْرِ الْمَسْجُورِ } The filled sea. It is also said to mean "kindled," based on His saying: *"And when the seas are filled with fire"* (Al-Takwir: 6). It is narrated that on the Day of Resurrection, God will turn all the seas into fire, with which the fire of Hell will be fueled. Ali (may God be pleased with him) once asked a Jew, "Where is the location of Hell in your scripture?" The Jew replied, "In the sea." Ali said, "I find him to be truthful," citing the verse: *{And the sea filled with fire}*.

{ لَوَاقِعٌ } It will surely descend. Jubayr ibn Mut’im said: "I came to the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) to speak with him regarding the captives. I found him in the dawn prayer reciting Surah al-Tur. When he reached *{Indeed, the punishment of your Lord will surely occur}*, I embraced Islam out of fear that the punishment would descend."

{ تَمُورُ السَّمَاءُ } The sky will be agitated, moving back and forth. It is also said that *al-mawr* is movement in waves, like something oscillating in width, similar to the kneecap (patella) in the knee.

{ فَوَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ * الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي خَوْضٍ يَلْعَبُونَ * يَوْمَ يُدَعُّونَ إِلَىٰ نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ دَعًّا * هَٰذِهِ النَّارُ الَّتِي كُنتُم بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ * أَفَسِحْرٌ هَٰذَا أَمْ أَنتُمْ لَا تُبْصِرُونَ * اصْلَوْهَا فَاصْبِرُوا أَوْ لَا تَصْبِرُوا سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْكُمْ ۖ إِنَّمَا تُجْزَوْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ }
